Upper School Curriculum - Physical Education (PE) [.pdf file]

The aims of the Physical Education programme is to fulfil the National Curriculum requirements and to encourage enjoyment of physical activity.

  1. To promote physical activity and the understanding of what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.
  2. To develop positive attitudes observing the conventions of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour, whilst learning how to cope with success and limitations in performance. To value and experience hard work in attempting to consolidate performances. To be mindful of others and the environment.
  3. To ensure pupils understand and follow safe practice in every activity.

Year 7

Knowledge, skills and understanding.

Pupils are taught to develop the following areas:

  • Acquiring and developing skills
  • Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas
  • Evaluating and improving performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health

This is done through a programme that includes:

Invasion Games - Hockey (Girls), Rugby (Boys)

Short Tennis and Squash

Striking and Fielding Games - Cricket

Gymnastics, Athletics, Dance, Swimming

All pupils follow the same curriculum and are encouraged, through the activities, to develop their ability in acquiring, applying, selecting and evaluating and skills and learning health and fitness principles.

Teaching Group Organisation

In Year 7 pupils receive five periods of Physical Education per fortnight. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups for each activity. Activities are taught in blocks.

Year 8

Knowledge, skills and understanding.

Pupils are taught to develop the following areas:

  • Acquiring and developing skills
  • Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas
  • Evaluating and improving performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health

This is done through a programme that includes:

Invasion Games - Netball (Girls), Football (Boys)

Striking and Fielding Games - Rounders

Gymnastics, Athletics, Dance, Swimming

All pupils follow the same curriculum and are encouraged, through the activities, to develop their ability in acquiring, applying, selecting and evaluating and skills and learning health and fitness principles.

Pupils are grouped according to their ability in the four areas of knowledge, skills and understanding, as outlined above.

Year 9

Knowledge, skills and understanding.

Pupils are taught to develop the following areas:

  • Acquiring and developing skills
  • Selecting and applying skills, tactics and compositional ideas
  • Evaluating and improving performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of fitness and health

This is done through a programme that includes:

Invasion Games - Hockey, Netball, Football

Gymnastics and Dance

In the Summer Term of Year 9 all pupils begin a Short Course GCSE programme. During the summer pupils cover Athletics and Rounders modules. In Year 10 they select one activity and a Exercise and Fitness module. All pupils get the option of taking part in Outdoor and Adventurous activity.

Teaching Group Organisation

In Year 9 pupils receive two periods of Physical Education each week. Pupils are taught in graded ability groups, either single or mixed sex, as appropriate for each activity. The curriculum covers a wide range of activities, these being taught in five week blocks. The activities are a progression of those taught in Year 7 and 8 helping to prepare pupils to make informed choices about their Physical Education programme of study for Key Stage Four (Years 10 and 11).

Physical Education - Core Short Course GCSE Programme - "Healthy Lifestyle"

This course aims to enable pupils to:

  • Develop an appreciation of the relationship between physical activity and healthy lifestyles
  • Encourage pupils to develop positive attitudes to physical activity
  • Ensure that pupils understand and adopt safe practice.

Physical Education is a practically based subject and the syllabus is designed to emphasise physical activity.

40% of the final grade a pupil receives is allocated for performance in two practical activities.

20% is allocated for the pupil’s ability to analyse the performance of themselves and others.

The remaining 40% is allocated for the written theory examination, which tests pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • Factors Affecting Participation and Performance
  • Safety aspects and risk assessment in sport and physical activity

All pupils plan, perform and evaluate a six week Personal Exercise Programme.

Assessment

Examination Board: Edexcel Syllabus No: 3827

On their reports pupils will be graded for effort according to the whole school reporting system and the code of conduct.

Attainment is assessed as follows:

  • The theory paper, worth 40% of the final mark, is assessed by final examination.
  • The Analysis of Performance grade is awarded through continual assessment and moderated during the final practical examination.
  • The marks for the two practical activities are a combination of coursework and final practical examination and are also moderated by the exam board.
