Year 9 Personal Development |
 Year
Nine |
| During the year, pupils will explore the following
key questions: |
How will my KS4 choices affect my aspirations for the future?
What information do I need to anticipate sexual activity and
relationships?
How do I meet my needs in terms of mental and emotional health?
How do I understand the idea of global citizenship?
What is the purpose of punishment for law breakers? |
| Pupils will explore these questions
through our five Conference Days, but also across other curriculum
areas. |
| In RE, pupils will study the aims
of punishment. Through an in-depth examination of the Jamie
Bulger case, pupils will consider 'fair' and 'unfair' punishments,
how prisons work and what can be done to rehabilitate criminals. |

Day Two (November) |
'Healthy Lifestyles' |
| Pupils
will build on earlier studies of healthy lifestyles. There will
be a particular focus on mental health. By considering two particular
feelings: anger and stress, pupils will develop a greater understanding
of strong emotions and potential coping strategies. Pupils will
analyse data from the Health Related Survey, completed in the
previous academic year, to identify the main needs and concerns
for pupils at our school. These points will be passed to School
Council. |

Day Three
(January) |
'Making Choices' |
| Year Nine are embarking
on an important stage in their school career-deciding Key Stage
4 options. This Conference Day will give pupils the opportunity
to think carefully about the decisions they are going to make.
This will reinforce many key ideas from the PD programme, as
pupils will examine how you make a good decision and the various
ways in which you can access information, support and guidance. |
| Pupils will use
KUDOS, a computer programme, to develop their awareness and
understanding of certain professions. |
| A presentation from
B-Live will give pupils key information about sources of support.
|
| In
their tutor groups, pupils will examine what we mean by the
term 'work', the various types of work and the skills which
encourage employability. |
|
PD
Day Four (March)
|
'What Does it Mean to be a Global Citizen?' |
What is the EU?
The European Parliament |
| Pupils will extend
and consolidate their understanding of Global Citizenship, which
they will have started to examine in their Geography lessons.
Pupils will consider the financial, environmental and social
implications of globalisation through a number of interesting
workshops, including the Trading Game. |

Day Five (April)
|
'Young People and the Law' |
| This
Conference Day will give pupils the opportunity to build upon
their recent Citizenship studies within RE. Pupils will examine
topical issues concerning crime and punishment. They will develop
their understanding of the Criminal Justice System, and will
work with our Community Safety Officer to learn about the specific
role of the Police Force. Pupils will also work with the local
Anti-Social Behaviour Co-ordinator to develop greater awareness
of the definition and causes of anti-social behaviour. They
will study a variety of case-studies to explore the strategies
employed to deal with anti-social behaviour, whilst also giving
them the opportunity to practise their own skills of negotiation
and conflict resolution. Pupils will also examine a number of
examples from the media to examine the factors which lead young
people to commit acts of violence, and assess recent campaigns
to combat this. |
