Year 7 Personal Development |
 Year
Seven |
| Pupils will explore the following key questions: |
How can I deal with physical, emotional and social change?
How well do I understand myself as a learner?
How well equipped am I to resist bullying?
What makes my immediate community?
How do I balance my rights with my responsibilities and the
need for rules? |
| Pupils will explore these questions through
our five Conference Days, but also across other curriculum areas. |
| In RE pupils will study our local
community to develop a greater understanding of diversity and
the needs of its members. |
| In Geography pupils will examine the development
of a new leisure park, gaining a greater understanding of how
decisions are made at a local level. |

PD Day One
(September) |
'Myself as a Member of a Community, Myself as a Learner' |
| Pupils will take
part in a simulation - The Island Game. This activity requires
pupils to imagine they are stranded on an island. In groups,
pupils face a series of decisions. This activity introduces
important citizenship topics such as democracy and the meaning
of community, while also encouraging pupils to reflect on their
skills as a team player. |
| The second half of
the day will introduce our 'Learning to Learn' programme. Pupils
will develop greater awareness of themselves as learners and
identify ways to maintain good levels of progress. |
|

Day Two (November) |
'Managing Change' |
| This Conference Day
will encourage pupils to reflect on the many changes they have
recently experienced. Pupils will develop greater awareness
of the physical and emotional changes they may anticipate during
puberty. |
| Pupils will define
what it means to bully other people and develop strategies,
through drama workshops, for assertively resisting such behaviour.
|
| Nurses
from the Child and Family team will work with pupils. |

Day Three
(January) |
'What does Local Government do and How does it Affect my Life?' |
| Pupils will begin
the day by evaluating the Learning to Learn Programme. This
will provide key information for staff, but also give pupils
the opportunity to reflect on their learning. |
| The rest of the day
will focus on Local Government. Pupils will receive a presentation
on the various levels of Local Government. They will focus on
one particular level-Parish Councils. Through role play, pupils
will take on particular positions within a fictional community.
Their task will be to decide how the budget is to be spent.
They must identify priorities and use their skills of negotiation
to reach a number of important decisions. Local Pariah Councillors
will be on hand to act as consultants. Pupils will present their
ideas to the class and then reflect on their contribution-What
makes a decision fair or unfair? Would they like to be Parish
Councillors when they are older? |
| The
day will close with an exciting opportunity for pupils to express
their views on a local issue. South Cambridgeshire District
Council has asked that pupils consider a local village in which
100 additional houses are to be built. Pupils will give their
views on priorities for the village, particularly for community
projects. |

Day Four (March)
|
'How Can I Help Keep Myself Healthy?' |
| This Conference Day
gives pupils the opportunity to explore a number of different
aspects of health, including the mental, physical and social.
Pupils will revisit topics from Primary School as they consider
the importance of a balanced diet. The PE Department will lead
a variety of sessions, highlighting to pupils that physical
activity can be incorporated in daily life in many different
ways. |
| Pupils will reflect
upon the importance of mental health; how our emotions and feelings
change, and how we can respond positively to these changes. |
|
Pupils will also begin their Drugs Education programme as they
consider how substances can pose a threat to their health. Pupils
will look at the particular risks attached to smoking. |

Day Five (April)
|
'How Am I Coping with Change Now, and How Will I Cope with Change
in
the Future?' |
| Pupils will take
part in The Real Game, a career exploration programme for young
people. |
| The programme invites
young people to experience the issues and aspects of life that
adults face daily. Each student adopts an occupation. They learn
about their working selves within that role and examine how
adults have to balance the different aspects of their life,
including leisure time. This will also introduce them to the
basics of personal finance. |
|
The day will provide students with the opportunity to reflect
upon their time at CVC, and to ask themselves important questions
about their progress in all aspects of school life. To complement
this work, pupils will take part in a series of activities called
'Raccoon Circles'. These team-building activities encourage
young people to build stronger relationships with their peers,
and to assess their skills as a team player. |
