Ambassador School Status |
|
In March 2004 Comberton Village College was
invited to become one of just eighteen Ambassador Schools
across the country by the National Academy for Gifted and
Talented Youth at Warwick University.
|
|

|
CVC was identified by the DfES as catering exceptionally
well for Gifted and Talented pupils and, since then, the school
has been involved in sharing ideas and good practice in this
area with other schools, both locally and nationally.
|
| For our pupils, Ambassador
School status has resulted in particular in the forging of closer
links with the National Academy, bringing wide-ranging benefits
to those involved. |

Schools/Comberton to read more about our Ambassador School
status. Or, if you would like to find out more about events

Leading Edge Work in Gifted and Talented
at CVC |
Curricular:
At Comberton Village College we operate
a highly inclusive policy and aim to meet the needs of Gifted
and Talented students through appropriate differentiation of
curricular schemes of work. However, we also recognise the need
to operate with flexibility and have successfully employed acceleration
and enrichment programmes to advance the learning of exceptional
students in a number of curriculum areas. |
Extra-Curricular:
The 2004 Ofsted inspection highlighted
the ‘outstanding’ enrichment of the curriculum which takes place
at Comberton Village College in respect of the wide and varied
programme of opportunities provided in relation to curriculum
subjects, and as after-school and lunchtime activities, as well
as special extension days, summer activities, National Academy
involvement, residential excursions and use of visiting specialists.
|
Primary School and Sixth Form
College Links:
We are particularly proud of the close
relationships formed with our Primary feeder schools to enable
effective and appropriate provision for Gifted and Talented
students at the earliest possible stage. As a complement to
this work we run a Maths club for gifted Year 6 Mathematicians
and offer places to Year 6 students on our annual Summer School
courses, working alongside Year 7 and 8 students. Our links
with regional Sixth Form Colleges also continue to grow as we
seek to expand our provision for Gifted and Talented students.
|
Pastoral:
The school recognises a particular
pastoral responsibility to its Gifted and Talented students.
We aim consistently to promote and foster an ethos which recognises
and encourages achievement and which celebrates success. As
a specialist Sports College one way that this has been achieved
is through the award of the ‘Blue’ to outstanding young sportsmen
and women. In addition, many of our talented young athletes
have been assigned mentors to help them balance their time and
commitments as part of the Junior Athletes in Education programme
which was launched last year and which is now being extended
into other areas of school life. |
|

Summer Schools |
|
Comberton Village College has hosted a Summer
School for very able pupils each year since 2002. Each project
has aimed to offer a stimulating and enriching experience
for the students involved and to present them with an opportunity
to work with challenging and fun material in a positive and
friendly environment.
|
|
Participants have been drawn each year from
nominated groups of students in Year 6 at our feeder Primary
Schools, along with Year 7 and 8 representatives from CVC.
We are very hopeful that we will be able to offer a similar
opportunity to students currently in these Year groups in
2005.

Academy Students |
|
Since 2003 Comberton
Village College has made membership applications to the National
Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY) on behalf of
over 200 of its students, nearly half of whom have taken up
full membership.
|
|
The Academy is based
at the University of Warwick and strives to develop, implement,
promote and support educational opportunities for very able
youngsters. It achieves this by allowing members access to
online resources, materials and learning mentors, and by providing
opportunities for members to interact with each other and
develop supportive networks.
|
|
Once registered,
students may also have the opportunity to participate in any
of the Academy’s wider activities, including Summer Schools
and an Outreach programme.
|
|
The Academy operates
its own selection criteria for membership which are based
largely on the results of standardised test data. These include
Cognitive Ability Test scores (CATs), Key Stage SATs results
and GCSE results. CVC reviews students’ eligibility for membership
on an annual basis.
